Symptomatology

In depression, daily life is most often dominated by the following feelings: low mood, sadness, hopelessness or discouragement, and a sense of inner emptiness. Those affected suffer from severe lack of drive. In addition, ongoing anxiety can become a constant companion. Affected people are burdened by worries and heavy thoughts, such as feelings of guilt or thoughts of their own worthlessness.

This emotional and physical imbalance is often accompanied by somatic complaints: sleep and concentration disturbances, loss of libido, headaches, loss of appetite, stomach and digestive problems.

Therapeutic approach

Several factors are usually at the root. In the course of behavioural-therapy work these factors are first identified and then serve as a basis for learning a different, more adequate way of dealing with them.

Frequently asked questions

How long does behavioural therapy for depression usually take?
An acute treatment phase typically comprises 25 to 50 sessions over several months. The exact course depends on the severity and individual factors. We review progress in stages and adjust the next steps together.
Does Swiss health insurance cover the cost of therapy?
With a medical referral, the mandatory basic health insurance covers recognised psychotherapeutic treatment. Without a referral, the therapy is self-paid or may be reimbursed via supplementary insurance. We clarify your concrete situation during the first session.
What is the difference between depression and temporary low mood?
Depression is a medically recognised illness with a clearly defined symptomatology lasting at least two weeks. Temporary low moods are shorter reactions to stress that usually subside on their own. The first session includes a diagnostic clarification of your symptoms.
Do I have to take medication as well?
Behavioural therapy is effective on its own. In severe or persistent depression, combining therapy with medication can be appropriate. Medication is prescribed by a physician, not by a psychological psychotherapist.
What happens in the first appointment?
We take time to discuss your current situation, your history and your goals. You then decide, without pressure, whether the collaboration feels right. There is no obligation to continue.
